When kids make a difference in buying real estate

I met this nice couple from Switzerland last year meanwhile showing them a luxury property in Escazu.  They seemed to very clear about their objective of finding a nice location where to live in Costa Rica because after living in Switzerland for many years they decided to try the tropics.  The kids were lovely, she was at that time about 7 years and he was about 5.   These kids spoke English, French and Spanish, had traveled the world extensively and were anxious to find their new home and get finally settled.

After our first meeting showing them property in the Central Valley, they sent me a nice email saying that “after a lot of thinking, we have come to the conclusion that, although we liked the property very much, it doesn't fit our needs perfectly and that we will continue our search.  We hope you will have understanding for this decision.  We wish you all the very best and lots of success.”  Ummm!  This is a goodbye with nice words I said!  They are so kind, educated and polite that they could not have said it better.  This was back in December 2011.

They left and explored the country on their own for a while, until I got another email from them on March 3, and voilà!  They were living in Nosara, one of the most beautiful beaches of the North Pacific Coast of Costa Rica.  They wanted to view an oceanfront property that we had listed near the area and we met again a few days later.  We had a great lunch in a very good restaurant of Carrillo beach and a great conversation about their findings meanwhile touring the country.

The surprise came during lunch, after I asked a question about why they had chosen that area in particular for living, after touring the whole country.  They said, “it is because of the school, we found the perfect school and the kids are so happy that they just don´t want to move from here anymore, so we finally got settled.”  The couple has not only settled, the had invested in three properties in the area already, and we closed on the fourth one just last week.

The fact that schools can make a difference is a serious remark when parents care about their kid’s education.  Nosara has a Montessori school, Del Mar Academy, which has turn a town that was merely a famous destination for yoga and meditation, into a much more modern and active town, with new first class businesses and services, and luxurious residential compounds with younger families living there permanently year round.
